My wife and I are recently married and went to Tulum on our honeymoon! From the moment that we arrived, we received gracious, attentive and warm service and hospitality. We were greeting with a smile and frosty margaritas to enjoy on the deck of our beautiful beachfront cabaña. Everything about our stay here was phenomenal! El Mestizo is located on the most beautiful, secluded portion of Tulum, the property is lovely and the food delicious. We loved our stay here so much that we actually modified our plans so as to stay more time at El Mestizo. We also had the opportunity to get to know the staff quite well and thoroughly enjoyed our thoughtful conversations and friendly interactions. We highly recommend El Mestizo to anyone looking for a 5-star experience in Tulum! Muchas gracias El Mestizo! Les echamos de menos ya! :)

          The staff was very nice.

This hotel is NOT a 5-star place and offers no luxury at all - no air conditioning and not even a working fan, no hot water, no electricity after 10pm, no door on the bathroom, there were ants on our bed when we first got to the room. The grounds of the hotel were very raw and unfinished, etc... It is also one of the furthest south hotels, and there is really not much to walk to (except the Be, which is great). We were on our honeymoon and chose this hotel because it was listed as 5-stars - we couldn't get out of there fast enough.

The large palm frond thatch cabins are spread out along the edge of the coconut trees and rain forest on top of the pure white and soft sand dune bluffs overlooking the short distance to the intense blue colored Caribbean Sea. They are separated enough to create a sense of privacy, and each room is very unique. We arrived when they were not busy, so I was offered a tour of all the available cabins, and then was able to chose which one fitted my fancy. The convenient restaurant served breakfast which included fruit that tasted much more flavorful than what the expensive resort we stayed at in Playa del Carma had to offer. The Boca Paila area feels safe, and very quaint and romantic. Plenty of great restaurants and activities. I'm definately going back, and hope to stay at Mestizo again. All of the staff were very friendly, and provided flashlights at night and assisted with carrying luggage. Stay at Mestizo so they will stay in business.

The Booked.net reservation stated that I reserved a two bedroom suite, where each room had two queen beds, but then also stated the reservation was only good for two people. I was traveling with family total of 3, but the hotel did not have any two bedroom suites, However it was not a problem because they have several units with multiple beds, and in some the beds are separated into different sections of the room. I think this was more of a mixup with the reservation system.. i mean why would they offer a suite with 4 beds for a maximum of two guests to stay at. Be aware that there is no air conditioning, but it is right on the beach so does not really get as hot as other hotels.

We had a cabana right on the beach with amazing views of the sunrise, coconut trees and hammocks to relax in. Really friendly staff and even a margherita on arrival. Lovely romantic getaway.

Our original booking was for a garden view room. We were lucky to get an upgrade as while the beach side rooms are absolutely amazing the garden view room felt a little stifling. It is worth paying the extra!

the location is wonderfull, the best beach i ever seen in the world ! Very quiet, wild, and confortable too !

in the room, you can't make a coffee or a tea, you must buy at the retaurant every thing.

The best location and hotel in Tulum. We stayed for almost a week and we loved everything. For those who want really beach, ocean, sun on your holiday, you are 100% right with this hotel. One of the best beaches in the world right infront of your house with private sunning places. Don´t expecpt 5star room service and accessories, but you get 100 % the greatest mexican hospitality and Location and your own private house with ocean sounds to get a good sleep. The staff will advise you about everything to do in and around Tulum. The location and the houses are much worth more what you pay for ! On our 4 week honeymoon trip, which included, St. Martin, Saint Barths, Turks & Caicos, Cuba, Cancun, Riviera Maya, this was one of our favourits and we can really recommend you to go there. Book yourself and check it out !

Very friendly and helpful staff, room was very clean and serviced very well daily, room was spacious and close to transport and sights.

          very noisy at night time.

Location is just incredible. It is ultimate luxury with your own beach and you room facing the sea.

Price was too high for the accommodations

        • Family with children

We got a free upgrade to beach cabanas due to low season. Perfect setting on the Caribbean Sea. Nicest stretch of beach for at least 1 km to each side. Beach towels, beach bag, toiletries and sun beds provided (may not be enough in high season). Beach was cleaned every morning by resort staff! Reception Wifi reached as far as the hammock area under the palm trees!

Restaurant too expensive to permit onsite breakfast or dinner and very limited choice due to low season! We drove to Tulum village (10 km) every evening.

        • Family with children
          6.2

It was on a beautiful beach at Tulum. The rooms were clean and pretty, with nice touches like fresh plants/flowers every day, and organic toiletries provided. There were sun loungers and bar service on the beach if requested.

The main problem was that we did not get the room we booked, and they said there was no such room at the hotel and there must have been a mistake on Booked.net. We booked a family suite, described as having two separate bedrooms, each containing two queen size beds, and a private bathroom, as we wanted a bit of luxury for the last few days of our holiday. What we got was a beachfront bungalow with one double and one single, not worth the money we paid for it (this hotel cost four or five times as much as most of the other hotels we stayed in). The receptionist did then throw in continental breakfast, but this was to the value of around £10 per night so it wasn't much of a refund really. Had it not been for the two separate rooms on offer, we wouldn't have booked this hotel. The location on the beach is great, but it is a long way down the road towards the reserve, away from town, so wouldn't be much good if you didn't have a car. The restaurant was expensive and one of the worst meals we had in Mexico - we got a taxi somewhere else the next night.

        • Couple
          5.4

          Great beach Very friendly staff

Very expensive for what it is (fairly rustic cabanas) - you can get the same for much less elsewhere in Tulum Awful breakfast Kitchen fairly basic

        • Couple
          9.2

the location was dreamy (if you want to be in an absolutely nature friendly, ecological environment, in the middle of the jungle but still with a comfortable, very clean and nice design hotel) and the hotel staff were very friendly and extremely helpful! it felt like a family there!

they could have a nicer bar lounge

        • Group of friends
          4.2

          Beach location, nice staff

Way, way too much money for no amenities. No fridge in room, even the shower curtain was pitiful. For 350 per night, I expected much more. Could not even leave doors open at night as security guard was on deck, police on beach...very disconcerting. You could make lots of comfort improvements for minimal cost! Food overpriced and not very good. We had to eat other places in Tulum except for breakfast, which was also poor. Would never come back or recommend this place to anyone. Also when we first checked in, they tried to put us in the cheapest room when we had paid for the most expensive. When we insisted on being moved from the 2 nd floor walk up with one bed, we still only got the ocean view room, not ocean front, and had to argue until the manager realized that we were right and refunded the extra $$. This all needs to change. My travel friend plans to post a really bad review on Booked.net. Sorry, but this was bad.

        • Family with children
          5.4

Restaurant and bar staff excellent. Beach spot lovely, spacious and relaxing. Much more room to move and enjoy the beach than other hotels.

Room prices exhorbitant for the quality of facilities. Shabby conditions and visible signs of deterioration all around. No clean, warm water to bathe with. Lighting in the rooms non-existent. Housekeeping staff less competent than other staff.

        • Older travelers
          6.2

The location was great and the staff was polite.

I was appalled by the barebones room that we got for the steep price of $400. We were told that we would be staying in a bungalow with an ocean view. The "bungalow" was in a thatched structure 2 flights up that was dimly lit and had one big bed, a small folding table and a small wooden framed couch with faded cushions. The terrace was a narrow 5 feet by 14 feet and you could see the ocean through the trees if you stood up. No breakfast was included. We explored other facilities and discovered that while the prices are very high in Tulum, you get a lot more for your money elsewhere.
